Founded in 1967 by Prof. Almut Rößler, the Choir of the Johanneskirche Düsseldorf (Johanneskantorei) soon acquired a reputation as one of Düsseldorf's leading choral societies. It has performed a wide repertoire, from a capella music, oratorios and passions by Bach to contemporary works, such as both of Frank Martin's oratorios In Terra Pax and Requiem.
Since 1979 the Johanneskantorei has undertaken annual concert tours to countries such as France, England, Austria and Switzerland. In the meantime, it is fully involved in the musical activities at the largest Lutheran church in the city of Düsseldorf. Its task, under the musical directorship of Wolfgang Abendroth, is to create musically orientated curch services, cantata-based services as well as concert performances of major oratorios. Events in previous years, partly conducted by the predecessors of Wolfgang Abendroth, Gerhard Luchterhandt and Joachim Vogelsänger, have included King David by Honegger, Verdi's Requiem, Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini, the oratorio Heilige Zeichen by Petr Eben, Jephtha by Händel, Leonard Bernstein's Mass, as well as the larger works by J. S. Bach.
